The domed hinged lid with bead border and acorn finial, above a tapered baluster shaped body with an unusual beaded shaped spout, the wooden handle is attached to the body by a shell shaped moulding, standing upon a stepped slightly domed circular foot with beaded border, an engraved armorial to one side of the pot, height 28.5 cm, length ‘spout to handle’ 21.25cm, weight 28 troy ounces. The Coffee Pot is fully marked to the base with the Maker’s and Stering marks to the lid. We can be fairly certain that the name arms, ie, the ones at the top quarter, are those of the Irish family Carrol, or O’Carrol, although they are an unrecorded variant, having a serpent wrapped round the sword. The arms on the left below this are probably those of O’Connor, and the arms next to them are probably for Hennessy. Irish families all. The impalement, for a marriage, of a lion ducally crowned could be, as it lacks tinctures, literally any of dozens of families. The engraving of the whole is of provincial quality, the sort of thing you expect from a jobbing engraver in a small town. The arms are also engraved heraldically incorrectly, as the O’Carrol arms should be in the first and last quarters of the left hand side of the shield. I have seen this sort of mistake several times before.
